The first few lines of this song are Rumi's poetry. I heard the wonderful Hareesh Wallis read them in a time of heartbreak and longing. They resonated powerfully in my being and I felt inspired to put them to music. The rest of the song flowed from there.
To me, this song is about allowing the pain of this human journey to pierce us fully, to ripen us fully. As far as I can tell, none of us are exempt from the yearning, burning and aching that seem inherent on this earth walk. But, we can learn to hold it all with open arms, rather than seeking to avoid, repress, numb and escape intensity as so many do.This "turning towards" changes everything. As Rumi eloquently reminds us, when we let the fire in, it transforms us, opens us and sets us free. His poetry is replete with this ancient message, this guidance on how to navigate this human experience with courage and grace. On the other side of the pain, great gifts await us. As Leonard Cohen sang, "There is a crack in everything. That's how the light gets in." This song is about walking through the brokenness to find our wholeness.
lyrics
Don’t surrender your loneliness too quickly
Let it cut more deeply, let it ferment and season you
As few human or divine ingredients can
For something missing in my heart tonight
Has made my eyes so soft, my voice so quiet,
My need for God (Goddess) absolutely clear.
Ishq allah mabud lillah
God is the love, the lover and beloved
Goddess is the love, the lover and beloved
The lover and beloved.
In my longing I’ve emptied myself for you to fill me
For your waves of ecstasy to spill through me
In your Love my blossoms unfurl
In your Love I’ve found the priceless pearl, the priceless pearl
For something missing in my heart tonight
Has made my eyes so soft, my voice so quiet,
My need for God (Goddess) absolutely clear.
Ishq allah mabud lillah
God is the love, the lover and beloved
Goddess is the love, the lover and beloved
The lover and beloved.
